Murder of Minnie's Brother,

Abraham Kropf, 1918

The New York Times article shown below was uncovered on June 27, 2004.   The Max Karger in the article is Minnie Kaufman's brother-in-law, Mrs. Karger is Rose Kropf Karger (Tante Rosie), Minnie's sister.

Although the NY Times article doesn't specifically point out the relationship between Max Karger and the suicide-murderer Harry Reich, it appears that Mr. Reich was related to Max's wife, Rose Kropf Karger. Interestingly, on Minnie Kaufman's Ellis Island Papers there is reference to a Solomon Reich.   Minnie had listed Solomon Reich as her father--which is clearly untrue.   Whether this was done intentionally or was an Ellis Island clerical error, is not known.   According to the Oelbaum Family Tree developed by Marcia Teschner, one of Gittel's siblings was a Necha Oelbaum who married a Schlomo (Solomon) Reich.  Marcia lists five children from this marriage--but no Harry...perhaps Harry Reich was a grandchild of Solomon. This would make Solomon Reich Minnie's uncle--not her father.

Also, Minnie had listed on her Ellis Island papers Royal Webbing at 529 Broadway as her future place of employment;  the 108 Street address in Corona, Queens was where Minnie, Gittel, Kenneth and Seymour lived along with Rose and Max Karger and their children, Sam and Julius.

Recently, cousin Ed Ohlbaum discovered the burial place of Abraham Kropf.   It is at the Lezansker Young Men's Benevolent Association section of Mt. Zion Cemetery in Maspeth, NY.  Also buried there are Bessie Kropf, d. 6/30/1946, Nathan Kropf, d. 8/16/1934 and Tillie Kropf, d. 11/3/1952. They are almost certainly related to us. Hopefully their identities will be discovered.

In addition, there are two Reichs listed in this cemetery section.   They may very well be related to Harry Reich.
